Day 3 of OFFICIAL training

So after running last night, I had so much energy goin into the night that i didn't end up going to bed till pretty late. Nevertheless, I went to work this morning and was ready for an afterwork nap all day. So, thats just what i did. slept for an 1.5 hrs., woke up and raked the yard and now i'm getting ready to go running.
First, I have to load up my MP3 player and i'll be ready to go. Last night i listened to the CLASH. Alot of which is was "old CLASH". Great stuff and great accompaniment for running. Tonight I'm thinking BOWIE 'Station to Station and LOW. Low ,being my favorite album of alltime, i think will be good except for a few slower tracks.
I'm off.

Signing on

I ran 3 miles tonight in about a 30 min.
Oh and yesterday i ran about a 1.5 miles. i must have been running into the wind because it about killed me! Tonight I listened to some great tunes and found a good breathing rythm.

Can I get a watch that works right!?!

Today I ran...

Emilia and Lindsay went for a 6 mile run this afternoon, leaving me at the house with Olivia, Jenna and Maggie. This was the first time they ran 6 miles and they were gone for a long time. After they got back, I decided to get a quick run in before Lindsay took off, so I grabbed my running gear, Emilia set up her watch for timing purposes and off I went. I ran the 2+ mile loop at Millennium Park and everything was going well. I ran one minute and walked one minute, which is part of the program that I am using to get into running shape. I had a great pace going, when I ran past a guy, and he asked me what time it was.

No big deal right? I hit the mode button on Emilia's watch, told the guy the time (which I later realized was 2 hours off, not sure why Emilia had the time set wrong), and hit the mode button back to the timer. My running time was gone!!! No big deal right, I'll just restart the time and not miss a beat. Nope, this idiot could not figure out how to get the timer started again and I spent 2 or 3 minutes trying to get it to go. So I was frustrated, but I finally just put it back to the watch setting and ran using the watch. So I ran over 2 miles in what I estimated as around 25 minutes.

I was happy with it, but need to start to improve my time over the next two weeks. My goal right now is 10 minute miles, but we shall see.

I am going to try to get out again on Sunday, to make up for the run I missed on Thursday.

2nd Training Day

Today I ran for the second time. I borrowed Emilia's brand new sports watch that she won in a contest (another fun story, but not training related), so I could actually do the appropriate run.

I decided, since I was so successful on my long run last week, that I would step up the Couch to 5K training and alternate running and walking every 60 seconds for 20 minutes. I ended up going about 1-1/2 miles in 20 minutes, and felt pretty good afterwards. I kept right at the alternating every 60 seconds throughout the run.

I think I will do this pace twice more this week before moving it to the next level.

I am going out to Detroit April 14th, so that will be the first time John and I run together, as I am staying in town that night.

Hopefully we see a post from John in the next few days, as he has done a lot more than I have, including a "crazy" 7 day cleanse that he will have to tell you about. I wish that I had started the blog before he did that so we could of had a day by day update as he did it.

First Run...April 2nd, 2010

So, I could not put it off any longer!

Last Friday, Emilia and Olivia were at her parents for the afternoon, and I was going to go there after work. I stopped at home to change, it was a beautiful spring day, and I decided that this was the day that I went for my first training run of the year. So my plan was to follow the Couch to 5K plan, and cut the ramp up time in half to get to the 5K by the beginning of May. The first day it called for alternating 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking, for a total of 20 minutes, plus a 5 minute warm up and warm down.

So I left the house with my egg timer and walked down towards Millennium Park. About 15 seconds into my run, the egg time quit working, so I had no way to time my running/walking intervals! Well, Emilia runs the park all the time, so on a walk she once told me that one loop (that I had never walked) was about a mile long, so I figured I could walk/run that loop and be okay.

Well, 40 minutes later, I stumble back into the house, exhausted and feeling like I was going to die. Later I told Emilia that the loop was a lot longer than a mile, but she insisted that it was a short loop that she and Lindsay would run for their "warm-up". I told her that if I only ran/walked 1 mile in 40 minutes than I should quit right now!

Later, we found out that the loop was almost 2-1/2 miles.

At the end of the day, not a bad start...

And So It Begins...

So let me give you some background as to how all this started...

Last year, I ran the 5/3 River Bank Run with Emilia and Lindsay. We talked about it for months, and I planned and planned on training...The next thing I knew, it was the day before the race and I hadn't run one mile in preparation...

So I did what any normal person would do, I ran one mile the night before the race and the next day I "ran" the 5K in around 45 minutes...

(Since then, Emilia and Lindsay have run probably half a dozen 5K's and are going to run the 10K at this year's 5/3 River Bank Run.)

Fast forward to October 2009. I was in Detroit on business and spent the evening with my good friend John. I told him the story of the 5/3 run and how I planned on running it again this year, but I would not procrastinate and put off training. He immediately challenged me at this year's race, so here we are!!

Since then, there has been a lot of talk about training, a lot of training by Emilia and Lindsay, but not so much by Peter and John.

Thus the blog, an accountability tool for both John and I.

He and I will be posting our training regimen (I have run twice in April!), diets, whatever we feel is pertinent to our preparation.

Good luck to all runners except John, you are going down.
